First gameplay video (WIP)!

Finally we have reached important milestone in Exoplanet’s development and now we are ready to show you some basic gameplay mechanics and also a bit of English voice acting.

Please note that Exoplanet: FC in early alpha and this video does not represent the final quality of the game’s graphic and gameplay. Feel free to give us your opinion and any constructive criticism. We need your feedback!

The voice acting is a little corny… other from that, it’s awesome!

Well, we think we need some more experiments and tuning for the voice. Can you give us a good example how in your opinion Jack should speak?

This game has fantastic promise! I really hope you guys find all the support you need.

In regards to the voice acting, I think there are actually 2 places for improvement:

        1. The voice actor’s reading sounds to be done by an amateur. No offense to the guy who did it, but there are just some strange stresses and choices in how he speaks the sentences. I am a classically trained actor and novelist, so I do have some experience with this stuff. The chosen voice is also rather trite. Given that your playing with the mix genre of Sci-Fi and Western, I would look for a way to play on the voice too. We don’t need another Duke Nukem. The really memorable characters are the ones that break the mold. How can you break the mold for your heroe’s voice? Maybe if the actor you’ve got could stop trying to sound like a badass? He’s got a very nice tonal quality naturally and it’s marred by the Nukem. And, if you need other voice actors for additional characters, shoot me an e-mail. I’ve got tons of connections to awesome voice actors.

        2. The writing is a bit flat. Maybe it’s been translated from another language? Some quick suggestions:

Your current dialog -> My Suggested Replacement (s)

“I never desired to end my life on a dusty planet like this.” -> “Who the hell wants to end up on a dust ball like this?” or -> “I always wanted to breath my last on a s*** hole like this. Yeah… right.” (Your call on the swearing depending on the rating you’re shooting for.)

“This place looked abandoned for years… at least from outside.” -> “Oh look, an ‘abandoned outpost’ That looks completely safe.” or -> “You’d think these people would’ve cleaned a bit before they got themselves dead.”

“Half naked savages with automatic guns and grenades, drinking and taking shits. I can smell the civilization in the air.” -> “Smells like gunpowder and s***… gotta love civilization.” or -> “A bunch of drunken a**holes with automatics… just like a family reunion.”

I’m not saying that you should go with my suggestions. What I am suggesting is that you hire a professional writer (who’s work you like) and have them rework the dialog. It can be smoothed out and written in a way that supports the actor.

Harrison Ford once said to George Lucas: “George, you can write this shit, but you can’t say it.”. Stuff that looks good on paper doesn’t always come out with as much life when spoken.

I should’ve said that the voice acting sounds either like an amateur or a professional who didn’t get enough takes and wasn’t well edited/directed. The first few readings will often be rough like that. Didn’t mean to bash the guy, I like his voice. I just don’t like those takes of the lines.

Wow, this one is hell of a comment!
Thank you very much for the feedback and your generous suggestion, I will contact you a bit later when we are done wit the first demo. Some of our characters are so different and sometimes crazy and a couple of extra actors always would be welcome.
I admit that we are not ideal as writers and vioce actors (yet ;) ), but the best thing is, that we learn and can improve our results gradually. We listen to the community and always try to do the best. One does not sipmly create such big game as Exo – this is quite an experience for indie developers like Alersteam. There is a lot of difficulties we never imagine and a lot of learning in the process. Of course things could be much easier if we had a big budget and a traditional publisher, but in that case Exoplanet couldn’t be the game we want it to become. If we had a lot of publishers money we just pay and get the nest VO possible. But in our conditions it does not work that way, we work with all available options at the moment and stake on gradual but constant improvement.
Our voice actor is a good guy and higly proffessional so we will not lock him in a cage with biting bugs for the firts time :) . What he needs is to work a little bit more and probably this time we try to make Jack to sound more naturally. It was probably also an error of mine as a designer. I wanted Jack to speak initially like some kind of badass hero. Well, that is one good reason for getting feedback from community.
We plan to work with the professional writer in the future in order to improve the quality of the dialogs. These things just need some time and patience. An I know we have both.
Anyway we cannot mess it up cause we have such active and creative community as you represent.
